07Himpunan HINDRAF: Tumpu Pada Kelemahan Dasar BN

Categories: Isu Semasa and Anwar (English version below)

Apabila kita berpecah, suara kita lemah.

I support HINDRAF’s right to peaceful demonstration and therefore reiterate my appeal to the Royal Malaysian Police to approve a permit for their rally to take place on 25 November 2007. The right to peaceful assembly is guaranteed by the Malaysian Constitution and the November 10 BERSIH rally has demonstrated conclusively that the Malaysian people can act responsibly and in accordance with the best traditions of civil society.

However I must appeal to HINDRAF to consider a more balanced and responsible approach to addressing its grievances, which have been incorrectly attributed to the Constitution, and in particular Article 153. HINDRAF’s complaints should be directed towards the corrupt UMNO-led BN coalition government that is guilty of serious abuses of power and which continues to marginalise and neglect the plight of poor Indians, and has also failed to take into account the problems of all Malaysians, irrespective of race, colour or religion.

The HINDRAF movement is symptomatic of the fundamental problems that remain entrenched in our country and to stoke the flames of racism would only exacerbate racial tensions and animosity among Malaysians.

Malaysians of conscience who are committed to reforming this nation must recognise that a viable opposition is essential and now is the time to support it. For the pro-reform parties in society to work together effectively, they must find common ground, be open to communication and collaboration, and resist the temptation to scapegoat other races for their problems and frustrations.

Divided our voice is weak. But united and enlightened, we can together build a nation that we all can be truly be proud of, and one in which we can live in peace and harmony.

Anwar Ibrahim, former deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, who was in Mumbai for the global Islamic conference, spoke to DNA correspondent Prashant Hamine about charges of racial discrimination faced by Indians and other immigrants in Malaysia

What do you think about the racial discrimination faced by Indians in Malaysia?
Ours is a multiracial society and it is not just the Indians, but also the ethnic Malays and ethnic Chinese communities who have been complaining of racial discrimination. I have been consistently raising the issue for the past six to eight months. Although the Malaysian government has an affirmative action policy, it lacks transparency. Indians living in Kuala Lumpur are better off than those living outside Kuala Lumpur. Most live in abject poverty and lack basic necessities like water, food, etc.

How do you react to the concerns raised by the Indian government over the treatment of ethnic Indians?
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has raised the issue with the Malaysian government in a very polite and diplomatic manner. I hope it will make our government realise the treatment meted out to ethnic Indians. It is contradictory to complain about discrimination against Muslims in Burma and Palestine, while in our own country, Indians are being treated unfairly.

Do you agree that historically Indians have been treated as slaves in Malaysia?
It is not just the ethnic Indians, the Chinese and Malays are also complaining about ill-treatment. I don’t subscribe to the Hindraf’s (Hindu Rights Action Force) aggressive view, but pulling down temples [as the Malaysian government is doing] isn’t the way to go. It shows that we do not have faith in other religions. The problem in Malaysia is that the media, the judiciary and the various arms of the executive are lopsided. One does not hear the other.

Some Malaysian leaders believe that India must not get involved in local affairs…
These ministers are not aware of diplomatic niceties. When you raise issues of minorities being mistreated in other parts of the world, people are going to question the treatment of minorities in your own country.

What are you doing to resolve this crisis in Malayasia?
I have been openly engaging with the Indian community in Malaysia. I have been fighting their cases in our courts, even though I have been accused of being pro-India and pro-Hindu.

  3. anwar you are doing are good job ,the malay love the chinese comeing to now and the india you are they leader too go ahead with your plan the luck is shine toward you ,you are the leader for every one ,don,t worried about umno they play the dirty card again hope you win this comeing election

Let us all not become idiots. Let us face true facts and not divert to other information that leads to hate and misinformation. At first we notice that the Hindraf wanted to claim millions of money from the British government, but do you realise they think its just some silly joke. They won’t a shit what the letter wrote. After that the issue become to blaming the Malaysian government. What i think this is all a diversion of attention to get votes and seed people with hate and misinformation. We are a multicultural country and why, because of the British in the first place. Its hard to question things that happen in the past and now suddendly act like fools not knowing anything. Why is all the anger to the Malaysian government? even Anwar Ibrahim was sent to ISA, when there is a treat to national security this is what must be done. People always act to quickly. The Malays have learned from history from the reformasi brought by Anwar that it was a mistake to make mayhem in our own country. What is the real intention of Hindraf, if it is true to overcome poverty among the indians i seriously believe that by claiming millions of dollars from U.K from solved anything. Money will give comfort but it something to be worked out not in a short period. Dlm WWE yg gusti tu pun siap tunjuk tapi kita sbg masyarakat gagal melihat sumua ni. Kalau masyarakat mcm US pun bleh wat mcm tu, kita yg kata ada budi bahasa pula asyik kuat mencarut. Back to english guys. It is easy to gain attention with an issue like hindraf and then to manipulate the issue where everyone is angry and doesn’t see the truth. Lets just be nice to one another, act of desperation will just cause more problems.
